- A clear glass jar with a lid (preferably wide-mouthed)
- Clean pond or aquarium water (or dechlorinated tap water)
- Small aquatic plants (like duckweed, elodea, or hornwort)
- Gravel, pebbles, or sand (for the base)
- A few small snails or freshwater shrimp (optional)
- A bit of pond mud (for microorganisms and nutrients)
- Sunlight (indirect, not too strong)
How to Make It:
- Add Gravel or Sand: Put a 1–2 cm layer at the bottom of the jar. This anchors plants and supports beneficial bacteria.
- Add Pond Mud (optional): A small scoop helps introduce microbes and nutrients.
- Pour Water Gently: Fill the jar with clean, non-chlorinated water.
- Add Aquatic Plants: These will produce oxygen and absorb waste—key to balance.
- Add Tiny Creatures (optional): A snail or shrimp helps keep the jar clean.
- Seal the Jar (optional): You can keep it open or closed. A closed jar creates a true self-sustaining system, like a mini biosphere.
Care & Observation:
- Place the jar where it gets indirect sunlight—too much light can cause algae.
- Watch how plants grow, how air bubbles form, and how tiny creatures move.
- Do not feed the animals or change the water—everything recycles naturally!
