This interactive activity helps you understand the vast difference in scale between the size of the Earth, the Moon, and the distance between them. By simply measuring the distance between your outstretched hands, you can model how big the Earth and Moon would appear at that scale. Enter your arm span (in cm) below, and the calculator will show you the scaled diameters of the Earth and Moon — small enough to fit on your palms!
Interactive Activity Procedure:
1. Stretch out your arms and ask a friend to measure the distance from the middle of one palm to the other.
2. Enter the distance in the Earth-Moon Model Calculator and get the diameter of Earth & Moon to Draw
3. Draw Earth & Moon (with above diameter) on right and left palm respectively.
4. Keep your arms stretched to represent the Earth–Moon distance
